Place Description: 
Nature trails, birdwatching hides, occasional livestock grazing
Habitat: 
Estuary, reedbeds and salt marsh, freshwater dykes,
Wildlife Description: 
Internationally important for migratory, overwintering and breeding wetland birds, including avocet, redshank, snipe, lapwing, water rail, bearded reedling, common tern and garganay, black-tailed godwit, ruff, little stint, curlew, greenshank, sandpiper and whimbrel. Overwintering species include brent goose, dunlin, wigeon, merlin, hen harrier, short-eared owl, bittern and twite. Flowering plants include golden samphire, sea lavender, sea purslane, sea clover and thrift.

Castle Bottom National Nature Reserve is a small lowland site containing one of the most important valley mires in southern England, with associated heathland and woodland habitats.The reserve has recently been designated as a Special Protection Area (Special Protection Areas) which are sites of European Importance for their bird populations, and heathland birds.
