Wetlands disappear from heart of Swindon

A unique wetland site in the heart of Swindon is in danger of drying out, its rare wildlife disappearing possibly forever, following a succession of dry winters linked to climate change. In Rushey Platt, a Wiltshire Wildlife Trust nature reserve, common plants such as nettles and willow herb are rapidly invading areas where wetland plants such as sedges and common valerian once grew.

Pitt must look further

Today on World Wetlands Day, professionals from the field call on Sir Michael Pitt to look further before concluding that wetlands and land management can have only limited effects on flood retention. The experience of wetland professionals, meeting in London this week, contrasted strongly with the conclusion of the interim Pitt review on flooding.

Wildlife Trust acquires Nene Valley Reserve

The Wildlife Trust for Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Northamptonshire and Peterborough are now the proud owners of Summer Leys Local Nature Reserve near Wellingborough, thanks to funding from Natural England through Defra's Aggregates Levy Sustainability Fund and the Department of Communities and Local Government through the River Nene Regional Park.

The 'Green Highlands' Award, sponsored by Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH) was announced last Friday night at the very first Highland Tourism Awards, held at the Drumossie Hotel in Inverness and hosted by TV personality, Lorainne Kelly.The top prize was awarded to Northern Light Charters, based in Oban who offer private charters, wildlife cruises including bird-watching and whale-watching, island cruising and both research and survey services.
