Commonly reported but rarely collected. Sensu NCL and sensu Rayner (1985) includes Russula amoenolens which is probably more frequent than true R. sororia.
Amongst the earliest of the fruiting Mycenas.
Occasionally appears in Spring. The flesh turns reddish then grey with FeSO4.
