Blue Tit

Description

A favourite garden bird, the Blue Tit displays a far greater range of colours than its name suggests. In addition to the obvious blue colouring, the bird also carries a vibrant yellow breast, greenish nape, white head with a distinctive black eye-stripe and a black neck. The sexes are similar but the female is slightly paler. Juvenile birds are duller than the parents and have a greener crown, wings and tail and yellow cheeks.

Diet

Blue Tits feed on mostly insects, especially caterpillars and seeds. They will aslo feed on pollen, nectar and sap, especially in springtime. In autumn it will feed on berries.

Did You Know?

You may have a lot more blue tits than you think visiting your garden. Bird ringing studies have shown that over a hundred blue tits may visit a garden in succession, even though you may only see a three or four on your feeders at any one time.
