Bloody Crane's-bill

Description: 

Bloody Cranesbill is a hardy, hummock forming plant that has five-petalled flowers of a deep magenta colour that are borne at the end of slim stems from June till August. The leaves are dark green, deeply pinnate and typically 5-7 lobes. This perennial forms clumps of solitary terminal flowers, each about 3cm in diameter.

Distribution: 

Whilst the Bloody Crane's-bill can be found almost all over the UK they are most common in the west and north of England, Wales and Scotland.

Habitat: 

Common on calcareous and dry grassland, on rocky outcrops (especially limestone) and on the fringes of woodlands, scrub and dunes.

 

Uses: 

A useful plant for attracting insects, especially bees.
