A large fairly bulky grey warbler with a black cap if male and chestnut-brown for the female. Can be mistaken for the Marsh Tit which is similar in appearance but has a very different shape and habits. It has a distinctive fluty song similar to the Blackbird in tone but a higher pitch. Call is a hard 'tac'.
In the summer it feeds on mainly insects,but in the Autumn and Winter has a more varied diet including berries.Partial to hanging fat balls.
