Black Rat

The Black Rat normal lifespan is usually a year in the wild.

The Ship Rat.

Description

The Black Rat has a pointed nose, large ears and a slender body when compared to the Brown Rat (Rattus Norvegicus).

Distribution

Fairly rare in the U.K. where it is confined mainly to ports and the coast.

Habitat

In it's natural habitat the Black Rat is a tree dweller and is found in warmer climates nesting in Palm trees, where it builds a dome shaped nest.

Reproduction

There are 5-10 in a litter and there are 3-6- litters each year. The gestation period id around 3 weeks. The young are sexually mature 12-16weeks after birth.

Footprint Description

Fore foot has 4 digital pads, with distinct claw marks.3 interdigital pads,2 proximal pads, all of similar size. Hind foot has 5 small digital pads, similarly distinct claws, and 4 interdigital pads. 2 proximal on of which is elongated.Hand outlines commonly found.

Footprint Size

Hind foot - 2.5x2.5cm, fore foot - 1.5x2cm. Stride approx 10cm.

Droppings Description

1 - 1.2cm long, with diameter of approx 0.3cm.Rounded ends,deposited singly
