Information
Description: 

 There are a number of Boletes that are inedible and are distinctly bitter to taste, the Tylopilus felleus is one of these and can be easily mistaken for Boletus edulis. This is an inedible specimen.

Distribution: 

Common and widespread

Habitat: 

Grows in small groups in needle or leaf litter

Cap: 

The cap and stem of this fungus can vary from a pale tawny-buff to a yellow-brown colour and is dry and rough to the touch and the cap surface is difficult to peel from the flesh.

Flesh: 

The flesh is white and does not change colour when cut. It lacks a strong smell but is bitter to taste.

Gills: 

The tubes and pores are pale cream at first becoming a deep pink and bruising slightly darker.

Brown

Stem: 

The stipe is club-shaped and has a prominent dark meshlike network over it's entire surface.

Additional Notes: 

Felleus means "bitter as gall".
