Description: 

A blackish, cushion shaped crustclustered on dead branches with bark, especially Birch trees and occasionally other broadleaf trees.

Distribution: 

Infrequent throughout the year, sporulating durung Autumn.

Habitat: 

Broadleaf woodland favouring Birch and occasionally other types of tree.

Cap: 

The fruiting body is initially reddish-brown, becoming quickly black, encrusting, extending to variable extents over the surface of the substrate, tends to be arranged on elongated masses.

Flesh: 

Hard and black.

Additional Notes: 

Inedible.
