It's leaves are dark green and the flower is short stalked and a crimsom purple colour. This plant can self or cross pollinate but the main form of pollination is by insects, especially bees.
Widespread in the U.K. but less so in the midlands and southern England, especially in calciferous soil. It is more abundant in the North and West.
It prefers dry, acid soil but cannot tolerate waterlogged soils.
