A large, brown irregularly shaped fungus found either solitary or in troops on soil, moss or light grass in open woodland.
Infrequent during Spring.
In open woodland in damp locations or at woodland edges.
The fruitbody's upper surface (hymenial) is dull brown and smooth but with puckering or radial wrinkling towards the point of attachment. The lower surface is pallid, irregularly cup-shaped but expanding to a shallow irregular saucer shape.
Pale brown, medium and brittle. Taste and odour not distinctive.
Poisonous if uncooked.
