Firstly, lichens are very polymorphic according to local conditions. The two Xanthorias likely to be confused are X.polycarpa(1) & X.parietina(2). Never mind the fruit, look at the lobes. Flat and spread-out like distorted flower petals - parietina. Lobes bunched up, contorted & wrinkled (and small) - polycarpa. 2 grows all over, trees and roofs - 1 almost always on branches (esp.axils).
