Yes I thought maybe the smooth newt but just so much more colourful than others I have seen but yes it is
the start of the breeding season so I hope he has found himself a partner. Thanks !!!

This is a male Alpine Newt (not native to Britain). There are some introduced colonies, but I don't think they're at all common.

Yes, agree with King Edward - Alpine newt -my little book has them as doing well in various places in england, and also doesnt compete with native species, which is good!

I knew there was at least one colony in Edinburgh maybe they've spread, they would compete with both smooth and palmate newts

Thanks for the replys so an alpine Newt, well I have no idea how it came to be there especially as I just put my pond in last year, however the guy next door has a pond for years with many breeding smooth newts in so I wonder if he has a colony or breeding Alpine Newts ?
