Description: 

This is a poisonous perennial plant of the family Lilaceae. It is native to Britain. I grows from a thick, white creeping rhizome and the stems arched bearing numerous pairs of ovate or eliptic leaves in two rows. The flower are present from May - June and are greenish white, tubular and drooping, growing singly or in pairs from the leaf axils. The fruit is a dark blue berry.

Distribution: 

Common in the north and west of England, less common elsewhere. Easily confused with Lily of the Valley.

Habitat: 

Found in woodland, preferably in lime rich soil.

Uses: 

Said to cure bruising.
