Whitish in the cap, brownish in the stem and when cut the colour changes quickly either to red then brownish or immediately brownish.
Gills are close, initially salmon then dark brown coloured with age with a pale sterile edge.
Spindle-shaped and swollen in the middle, initially whitish, browning with age, staining reddish brown and then dark brown on handling. Ring on stem is double, white, with lower layer peronate, becoming brown and torn.
